What's a Literature Review?

"In a literature review, all of the available evidence on a topic is retrieved and reviewed, so that an overall picture of what is known about the topic is achieved. The value of one individual piece of research is greater if it is seen in the context of other literature on the same topic."

- Aveyard, H. (2010). Doing a Literature Review in Health and Social Care : A Practical Guide (2nd Edition). Berkshire, GBR: McGraw-Hill Education. p. 2. Retrieved from

JAVMA Citation Style

CVM students are expected to use the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association citation style in Senior Papers.

  • JAVMA guidelines for citation are available at Instructions for Authors  > Manuscript Preparation > Footnotes and References.
  • Names of journals should be abbreviated as they are in PubMed's NML Catalog. For instance, the NLM title abbreviation for Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association is not JAVMA, it is J Am Vet Med Assoc
  • AMA Manual of Style, 10th ed. available in print in AHL Reference R911.A53
