Data Management Plans

This guide provides resources to assist WSU faculty members and students who are creating strategies for storing, describing, and providing access to their research data.

What is Research Exchange?

Research Exchange is a digital repository that WSU researchers can use to preserve and share their research and educational materials. Any WSU researcher can deposit data in Research Exchange with support from WSU Libraries. They will incur no costs to do so.

Who can contribute to Research Exchange?

Any researcher at Washington State University, including faculty, students, administrators, staff and affiliates

Are there size limits to what can be deposited?

Datasets should not exceed 200 GB in total. Individual files cannot exceed 5 GB. Contact WSU Libraries for assistance with any individual files larger than 1 GB.

How can Research Exchange be used to highlight one's research?

WSU researchers can feature their work in a profile like Dr. Trevor Bond’s. WSU Libraries can assist in pre-populating the profile for researchers and can set them up to add additional materials. The following video gives an overview of the profiles that can be created in Research Exchange. Please contact libraries.research@wsu.edu for further assistance.

What file types can be contributed to Research Exchange?

Any file type can be contributed to the repository, but do consider that less common or proprietary file types may be more difficult for users to access, depending on available software.

How is copyright handled in Research Exchange?

We ask that researchers agree to a non-exclusive license permitting WSU Libraries to distribute their work online. This agreement allows them to retain copyright.

Researchers can choose to apply a Creative Commons license to their work. Creative Commons licenses indicate to users how they can and cannot use a piece of research. For instance, researchers can allow others to adapt and remix their work while giving credit to the original creator. Alternatively, researchers can indicate that they do not want their work adapted, sold, or used for commercial purposes. Please contact us for more information.

Are DOIs available for datasets?

Yes. A DOI or Digital Object Identifier is a unique string of letters and numbers that provides a persistent link to an item posted online. Whether you share materials to Research Exchange or merely want a DOI for material posted elsewhere, we can assist you. Contact us at libraries.research@wsu.edu

Can Research Exchange be used to satisfy funder requirements for making the outputs of a grant-funded project publicly accessible?

Yes, Research Exchange observes the FAIR principles for making materials accessible. As such, it meets the desirable characteristics of a repository. With that said, researchers should always consult their funders for specific guidance.

How does one make a deposit in Research Exchange?

Contact us at libraries.research@wsu.edu. We will ensure that you can log in to Research Exchange and submit materials via a webform. Alternatively, we will ask you to send us digital copies of your materials along with descriptive information such as the title, creators, date of creation, and abstract.
