A focus on US politics and political issues - some international content (i.e. US relations). Updated weekly - a good source for things in the news. Goes back decades.

Knovel provides access to online reference handbooks containing data for scientists and engineers

Pretty much the definition of a general encyclopedia for a broad audience.

Each monthly issue is devoted to an international affairs topic/controversy. You can find relevant articles by typing your subject, i.e. family planning, into the "Search Within this Publication" link. Source is "an independent monthly featuring global controversies."

Use with caution, of course, but can be very helpful for backgrounding particular topics (i.e. technology topics, issues that are too new to have made it into scholarly reference works), for giving you a basic outline of issues, and for giving you a starting list of citations.

You may find it most helpful to browse by discipline/topic, then narrow by type, i.e. Film -> Series will give you the Cambridge Film Handbook series.
