MLA Quick Citation Guide

Quick citation guide for using MLA 9 style

Welcome

Welcome to the WSU Libraries' MLA Quick Cite guide. This guide should help you with basic MLA (eighth edition) citations, but won't cover all types of sources that you may find and use. If you have questions about citing sources, please contact a librarian or try using some of the resources listed below.

9th Edition (2021) Major Changes

Core Citation Elements

The 9th edition of the MLA Handbook keeps the system of core elements from the 8th edition, but provides more guidance on how they can be used, as well as many more examples of citations. The new edition also includes a new chapter offering guidance on using inclusive language, many more examples of works cited, a new section on endnotes and footnotes, and a section offering guidance for creating annotated bilbliographies. The handbook keeps the core elements laid out in the 8th edition that can work across multiple formats. While not every element is used for every source, the elements should appear in this order:

  1. Author.
  2. Title of source.
  3. Title of container,
  4. Other contributors,
  5. Version,
  6. Number,
  7. Publisher,
  8. Publication date,
  9. Location.

The Purdue OWL's MLA Formatting and Style Guide provides a useful page with detailed descriptions of each element.
