Keeping Up with International News

...

College students have a lot going on in their lives. Keeping up with a basic level of awareness of international news might seem like its just one more thing that has to slide, but there are ways to keep up with news in a way that does not take too much time (unless you want it too!). The sources on this guide include a wide range of sources, from minimum to increasing complexity. Many are from a United States viewpoint, but not all.

Below are some suggestions and tools that you may find of use in keeping up with news (international, domestic, and local). You can go low-key using these tools, or you can go "pile it on!"

  • Email newsletters - you'll see a few of those in this library guide! A good way to get headlines and blurbs, and links to additional  content if you want to follow up.
  • Digital radio and podcasts - listen while you are on the bus, exercising, etc. Here's one from PRI - https://www.pri.org/programs/the-world
  • Read It Later apps. When you see an article that looks interesting, use Instapaper (my fav) or Pocket  to email it to yourself to read later. You will get all the text, working hyperlinks, most if not all graphics, and no ads or comments. Read at your leisure. I use Instapaper to send my articles to my Kindle where I can read a bunch of them at once in my personally curated magazine. Amazon also has a Send to Kindle app that you can use. Works with both the physical Kindle device, the Kindle Fire, and Kindle smartphone and tablet apps.
