Finding Historical Primary Sources

Assistance with locating primary source material within and outside the WSU Libraries.

Government Documents as Primary Sources

Government publications provide documentation on legal, judicial, and regulatory activities and can provide useful  current and historical primary source materials.  This page points to databases and digital collections that provide government information such as statistics, bills and laws, congressional and agency reports, court cases and decisions, hearings, maps, and consumer information.  Local, state, regional, federal, or international government information may inform your research.

Following Congressional (and other) Information

Congressional Quarterly Press

Congressional Quarterly (now owned by SAGE) has published congressional and other "Washington Beltway" information since 1945, originally to provide information to journalists about DC politics. It's a great resource for students researching political and other political history-adjacent topics!

Note: These are not published by a US government entity, so are not themselves government documents, but they include government documents (i.e. congressional votes) and can provide valuable context.

Congressional Quarterly Magazine (now CQ) comes out weekly, CQ Almanac (1945-2020) synthesizes a year's worth of CQs. It's a secondary source with primary source elements.  CQ Researcher publishes great weekly reports on topics in the news.

CQ (print) (1962-2004) JK1 .C15

CQ (online) 1983-current
