Histories of Fly Fishing and Angling

A guide highlighting some of the fly fishing and angling materials in the rare books and archives collections at Washington State University Libraries.

Introduction

This guide highlights materials held by WSU Libraries related to the history of fly fishing and angling. It is, by no means, an exhaustive guide so please consult our catalogs for additional materials.

Gallup Collection

One of the Libraries' most significant collections of fly-fishing and angling materials was donated by Vernon Gallup In 2006. Comprising some 20,000 books, this collection spans from the 1400s to the present, providing insights into fishing culture in the West. The following list covers the titles in the collection. Please note that classification numbers for these books will change as they are cataloged.

Plateau Peoples History

Native American communities have been fishing on streams and rivers in the West from time immemorial. In recent history, they have advocated for measures safeguarding ecosystems along the Columbia and Snake Rivers, among others. In one prominent example, numerous tribes and bands opposed the construction of the Dalles Dam, which resulted in the flooding of Celilo Falls—a traditional hunting site and gathering place in the Pacific Northwest. Some of this history can be found in the following.
