Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)

DOI's are required (if available) if you use APA style, and are valuable tools for your Zotero library (EndNote, Mendeley, etc.) as you can paste in a DOI and have it automatically create a bibliographic record for the article, dataset, chapter, or other resource type.

DOIs can be an important tool for alternative methods of promoting and determining the spread and impact of scholarly work ("altmetrics") because they provide a common reference link. And you can search by them to get to the article/chapter/etc.

Crossref
"an official Digital Object Identifier Registration Agency of the International DOI Foundation" and manages most academic journal DOIs: "Crossref makes research outputs easy to find, cite, link, assess, and reuse. We’re a not-for-profit membership organization that exists to make scholarly communications better."

DOI example: 10.1186/s13059-014-0424-0 (they can be longer or shorter, and include letters)

Zotero DOI Manager
"The add-on can auto-fetch DOI names for journal articles using the CrossRef API, as well as look up shortDOI names using http://shortdoi.org. The add-on additionally verifies that stored DOIs are valid and marks invalid DOIs."

Have a citation and need a DOI [CrossRef's free doi lookup)
Provides a number of options. If you have multiple citations without DOI;'s, use the Simple Text Query service (all you have to do is paste in your citations). There is also a space to past in a DOI to resolve to a citation, but you might as well just search it in Google/Bing/etc.

You can also do this in Zotero, or just do a search for the DOI in Google, Bing, etc.
