Tutorial Best Practices

Internal reference for creating and maintaining online learning objects.

Best Practices

  • Determine purpose of video: point-of-need, for use in a LibWizard tutorial, encourage critical thinking
  • Keep videos short (no longer than 2 to 3 minutes; if point-of-need video, no longer than 30 seconds to 1 minute)
  • Modularize point-of-need videos when possible
  • When possible, link to videos at point-of-need (in the databases, catalog, LibGuide, or during a reference interview)
  • In point-of-need videos, start the video out with the most important information, then elaborate
  • Make videos clean and professional, but keep them simple and straightforward rather than focusing on entertainment
  • Create a script and storyboard the video to stay on task
  • Speak slowly and clearly
  • Use call-outs when possible
