Using AMA Style

A guide to using AMA citation style

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to cite public domain images?

  • While you are not legally required to cite public domain images, it is still considered best practice to provide attribution.

Do I need to cite personal images?

  • You do not need to cite personal images, as long as they are not published elsewhere.

When do I cite a chapter of a book as opposed to the entire book?

  • If the book is authored by one person, it is sufficient to cite the book as a whole. If the book contains chapters authored by different people (like textbooks frequently are), then you need to cite by chapter. Remember, when citing a book chapter, you must include the page numbers for that chapter in the citation. See "eBooks" or "Print Books" for more information.
